How to help a child with reading disabilities: education for kids

A child with reading disability sure need your help. Your patience is also helpful for the slower learner. Remember not to criticize the slow learner or else they will withdraw from trying to learn at all. Some children learn how to read faster because their parents have included a lot of learning activities at home and therefore they have a better grip. Slower learners have not been exposed to a lot of reading and therefore need more exposure. Just like anything else in life, practice makes perfect. The slower learner will need many sessions of tutoring and coaching.

Children with reading disabilities may have problem concentrating, associating, recognizing letters, don't know all the letters, lack of interest and putting words into sound. The first thing you can do is to make an assessment of why the child is having a harder time learning. Is there things that prevent the child from liking to read? Does the child have vision problem, having lack of interests, hyper, trouble concentrating, personal problems, bored, and many more. Once you have targeted the problem you can begin to tackle it. You can use the reward system to encourage more reading. For example you can offer a small little gift like a piece of candy, toy or sticker to help reward the student. Most students are plain bored and don't see why they need to learn how to read. Mayble you can make your lesson more fun and interactive and invole your students.

You can first go over the letter of the alphabet and make sure that the student know all about it. How can they read if they haven't memorized the alphabet. If they don't know the whole sequence then you can take the time to teach it to them. Singing the alphabet and watching a cartoon about it really helps too. Next you would move on to putting vovels and constanent together. This is the harder part for some students. This requires more time to memorized and understand. This is where the problem is.

You can look at it from learning a foreign language point of view. When you have to learn a foreign language you're no different than a child trying to learn how to read. You'll be struggling too. You can go from step to step and see where the problems are. The first thing would be the alphabet. When I was trying to learn French, no matter how many times I'm studying it, I keep on messing up with the alphabet. If I have problem with the alphabet and how to pronounce it then how will I know how to put the words together right. Learning how to read requires that you go in order and master each level before you can go on to the next level. One of the problem of a disable child could be memorization. Disable children often have memorization problems. So you can work on their memorization more by associating objects with words and letters.

You have to work with them from the first step to the last step. You have to ensure that they have master one step before moving on to the next one. Some children have difficulty pronouncing things and you have to work with them on that. They have to be able to pronouce all of the letters because they can start to put the parts together. Next you can use objects and pictures and videos to enhance your teaching. You can go back and know that every student learn differently. Some learn by hearing, like me, some learn by touching and some by watching, you have to assess each student indiviually. Students not only learn in classroom but also at home. Most of the studying can be done more effectively at home because the student are by themself and have more time to process the material whereas in class the student has to compete with other student.
