CEBU CITY, Philippines – The robber, who shot an American tourist, in Barangay (village) Mabolo, was allegedly a hitman for the Tau Gamma Fraternity, according to Cebu City police official.
Neighbors of Carlo Villarin in Barangay Kasambagan provided the police background information on the suspect, said Senior Inspector Michael Anthony Bastes, chief of the Thief and Robbery Section.
Bastes said they would also look into the records of the suspect.
Bastes said the family of American victim Tim Timmerman, including his Filipina fiancee, plan to file charges against the robbers.
Timmerman arrived here on December 27 to his fiancee, a registered nurse whom he met in Wisconsin.
Cebu Daily News tried to interview Timmerman's fiancee and family but they declined.
The American was in stable condition, though he remained confined at the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital.
Villarin, 32, and fellow Tau Gamma members Christian Dawal, 19, and Roy Rabaca, robbed Timothy Timmerman, sister Tammy (not brother as reported by the police) and friend Andrew Preston in a convenience store on F. Cabahug Street, Barangay Mabolo last Sunday.
Tammy and Preston were forced to give up their digital camera and digital camcorder to the robbers who were then chased by Timmerman as they fled the area.
Villarin then shot Timmerman in the stomach.
Police later arrested the three suspects but only recovered the digital camcorder. /Correspondent Justin Anjuli K. Vestil
